Credit where it isn't due

Reporting on the efforts of the pro-fun folks, the Daily Cal says:
A student coalition is racing to collect signatures for a petition against a city code passed last month making party hosts responsible for underage drinking at their events.

With less than two weeks before the April 26 deadline to submit the petition, students including members of the ASUC and the Greek and co-op communities have gathered 500 signatures in the past eight days. Organizers hope to collect 8,000 total signatures to try to force the changes to be reviewed by voters in 2008.
The ASUC? The ASUC is getting credit for this? What has the ASUC done? Has it spent money on this campaign? Has it hired signature-gatherers? There are groups that deserve credit, but the ASUC is not one of them.

It says 'members of the ASUC'...

Andy Kelley, Kenan Wang and Gabe Weiner are members who are independently working on the petition...

i think they've even pointed out though that the ASUC wasn't doing anything about it at first.

'members of the asuc' means members of the asuc, not necessarily the asuc - and just fyi, many folks in the asuc are helping with the petition - you don't see and know all

I would like to clarify for record-keeping purposes that, in recent weeks, ASUC personnel and resources have contributed an invaluable benefit to this campaign. Although the different ASUC officials are devoting a differing amount of time and effort to this campaign, it is fully appropriate to recognize the ASUC for its contribution. And, indeed, Gabe Weiner, Andy Kelley, and Kenan Wang - 3 members of the steering committee - are full-fledged officials within this body.

Let me similarly clarify that "members of the ASUC" means nothing more than "Cal Students." I'm a member of the ASUC. As written, it was taking the work of Cal Students and attributing the name ASUC to them.

If the ASUC has committed resources, that would be nice to know. If we're just talking about folks who do work with the ASUC, well, yeah, those are the folks who are interested in doing stuff. That they would also spend time to fight for fun is neither a surprise nor something that should be associated with the ASUC's name, unless the ASUC itself has actually stepped up to do something.

Good point - I should further clarify that actually. A contingent of the EAVP office has stepped up and institutionalized the campaign through its infrastructure. Additionally, the EAVP office is now a base through which filled-out petitions and voter reg forms can be filed and processed.

It is my hope that, once campaigns end, a wider group of ASUC members will see it as necessary to get involved in this effort.

Money?

Not yet. Hopefully. Working on it.
