Impeachment: The Short Version

Here is the short summary of the impeachment trial.

Plaintiff: "We're incompetent and don't know anything about the JRPs. BUT our interpretation of the JRPs should be considered more valid than the Judicial Council's and thus Sonya Banerjee should be removed."

Defendant: "The plaintiffs have no fucking clue what they're talking about."

Result: Sonya Banerjee was NOT removed, on a vote of 12-8.

CalSERVE, SQUELCH! and BCR voted against the removal, as expected, and DAAP and most of Student Action voted for it, as expected.

Ali Ansary voted against it, which was also fairly expected. Jeff Manassero voted against it, which surprised me.

Thus concluded a 7-hour trial and a half-hour or so of deliberation. What a waste of fucking time.

I'll give you the more in-depth version later. There is a large amount of humor.

What exactly is the game that DAAP is playing this year? Yvette Felarca would not stand with the pro-Israeli Jewish groups and anti-affirmative action Asian groups that form SA's base.

Is Dimitri gonna call in a favor at some point down the road?

DAAP has a grudge against the Judicial Council. Dimitri wasn't playing tool.

DAAP has had problems with the J-Council for a long time. Yvette would have voted the same way. Such an action is not an alliance with the voter base of SA but a move against the J-Council.

It is of little consequence to them that Mike Davis is no longer chair. More importantly, they probably (legitimately) feel that the J-Council needs to have their power and authority checked.

The JRPs and Constitution don't necessarily do enough to prevent problems with the J-Council. Impeachment proceedings are among the few things the Senate can do to prevent a runaway council.

How about spending time to review the By-Laws and Judicial Rules of Procedure to make sure they don't contradict the Constitution? Or how about allocating project funds to branches of government other than the executive? Who would have thought that constructive efforts would produce results.

Or how about not trying to hand out Oren a check for $22000?

Trying to help entrench SA in power by letting them get away with violations is not being very productive at all. Their best case scenario is to have CalServe or independent's win at least in the Senate.

I have a hard time believing this is actually happening, but this is the ASUC after all.
