I was watching World News Tonight, and they spent half the show talking about Jennings' legacy fighting "Big Tobacco" through investigative reports. I think he probably wouldn't complain about people "using" his death in this way. That's not to say that it's a good cause. If people are inspired to quit smoking, that's obviously a good thing health-wise. But I hope this doesn't lead to more misguided lawsuits and regulations, especially since smoking is your choice and your responsibility.
I recall a comment on Fark that I can't attribute.
"Michigan funds its schools through massive taxes on cigs. Now that smokers are dying, they keep raising the taxes to keep the funding levels the same.
I figure eventually they'll have a campaign to get kids smoking just to balance the budget."
Trying to get folks to stop smoking is totally cool. Bitching about 'Big Tobacco' is lame. Seriously, if you can't out-advertise the dudes telling folks to inhale smoke, the only direction your finger should be pointing is at yourself.
